When it comes to describing the achievements of Michael Jordan and the dynasty of the Chicago Bulls, it is difficult to know where to start. Jordan’s innumerable records and unforgettable moments are achievements that are sometimes lost due to his 1987-1988 season. Although Jordan played only 18 games in his sophomore year due to injury, in his fourth season in the league he competed in all 82 games. In that 1987-1988 season he had an average of 40 minutes per game. Shooting a career-best 53 percent from the floor, he posted averages of 35 points, 5.9 assists, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.2 steals. Chicago won 50 games that season, the franchise’s best mark in 13 years, and advanced to the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 1981. With the season falling outside of Chicago’s historic run of six championships in eight seasons, casual or younger National Basketball Association (NBA) fans may overlook Jordan’s impressive individual campaign, but the results speak for themselves. Jordan was not only named Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the season, the first of five such awards but also won Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY) honors, one of only two players to win the awards in the same season. Jordan also won the MVP award at the 1988 All-Star Game, his first of three, among a number of additional player awards.
